If you haven’t been to or heard of the Swarthmore Co-op (located at 341 Dartmouth Avenue), then it’s time you hop in the car, saddle up the old bike, or strap on your walking shoes and pay a visit to this unique institution and anchor of the Swarthmore Town Center.

The establishment was created by residents nearly 74 years ago which makes it the third oldest co-op in the nation! They constantly strive to enrich the community with events like their Real Food Festival, and they recently announced an exciting happening for this weekend. It seems only fitting that the store that focuses on local, organic and sustainable foods and lifestyles, would open their doors for a special event on Earth Day.

This Sunday, April 22, Swarthmore Co-op will host the unveiling of a 55-foot wide by 5-foot high mural. Led by artists and designers, Anthony Sufley and Jake Beckman, a group of children helped to paint the mural for permanent installation at the Swarthmore Co-op.

The Creative Living Room was invited by the  Co-op to bring a group of talented kids of all ages together to create an original work of art for the interior of the store that represents our connection to the earth, nature and the environment.  Through the Mural Art Camp, over Spring Break, 10 local kids between the ages of 6 and 13 painted for 2 1/2 hours each day for 4 days.  The mural will be unveiled on the walls of their store at exactly 12:30 pm and a fun filled reception with follow to celebrate the tremendous accomplishment and beautiful contribution to the facility.

Schedule of events:

1. 12:30 to 1 pm – Unveiling at Swarthmore Co-op

2. 1 to 2 pm – Reception at Swarthmore Co-op

Everyone involved is very excited to see the final product and hope many people of the community take time to support the childrens’ accomplishments by visiting the store this Sunday. Until then, take a special sneak peak of the work, HERE.
